No matter how good the writer, you never stop at a first draft.\u00a0 There are typos to fix, sentences to reword, and grammar to correct.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just the technical side of things.\u00a0 There will inevitably be places where the pacing is uneven, where some plot points aren\u2019t explained as clearly as they should be, and where the character development isn\u2019t quite right.\u00a0 So you go back over everything, making changes and improvements, until you\u2019ve got a second draft.\u00a0 But you\u2019re still not done.\u00a0 There\u2019s no set number of drafts you need to go through before you you\u2019ve got a final script (or manuscript, depending what you\u2019re writing).\u00a0 A lot of writers seem to end up with three to five, but it really depends on the writer and the particular project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thing is, you can only edit your own writing to a certain point.\u00a0 As a writer, or a game designer, for that matter, it\u2019s easy to overlook flaws in your own work.\u00a0 Sometimes, you\u2019re just so familiar with it that your mind skips over typos and such.\u00a0 Or something that seems obvious to you, who knows everything about the story, isn\u2019t nearly so obvious to anyone else.\u00a0 Even the best writers and designers need a second set of eyes.\u00a0 And that\u2019s where a good editor comes in.\u00a0 Of course, not just anyone can fill that role.\u00a0 Editors need a certain set of skills a good sense of writing and storytelling to provide truly useful feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
