{"id":463,"date":"2016-09-10T20:47:07","date_gmt":"2016-09-11T01:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penandswordgames.com\/AurorasNightmare\/?p=463"},"modified":"2016-09-10T20:47:07","modified_gmt":"2016-09-11T01:47:07","slug":"how-to-skip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penandswordgames.com\/AurorasNightmare\/how-to-skip\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Skip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve mentioned in the past that, like any good visual novel, Aurora\u2019s Nightmare will include the option to skip over previously read scenes.\u00a0 That\u2019s invaluable when you\u2019re replaying individual sections or even the entire game to experiment with different choices.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve encountered two different ways of handling skipping in the visual novels I\u2019ve played.\u00a0 The most common type of skipping is to basically throw the game into fast-forward until you either reach a decision point or a section of unread text (or until the player simply switches out of skip mode).\u00a0 The advantage of that approach is that you get to see what\u2019s going on the entire time so it\u2019s easy to keep track of where you are in the game and go back to regular speed whenever you want.\u00a0 The down side is that, even in fast-forward, skipping through a lengthy section can still take quite a long time.<\/p>\n<p>The other type of skipping breaks the game into scenes.\u00a0 Then, at the beginning of each scene, you\u2019re given the option to skip it entirely.\u00a0 Or, if there\u2019s a decision point, skip right to that.\u00a0 This method has the advantage of being really fast, which is great when navigating a large story.\u00a0 On the down side, it\u2019s so fast and abstract that it\u2019s easy to lose track of your place in the story if you\u2019re not paying close attention or using a flowchart or something as a reference.\u00a0 You also can\u2019t just stop somewhere in the middle of a scene, it\u2019s all or nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Both methods have their pros and cons.\u00a0 Honestly, the best solution would probably be to use a combination of the two, letting players skip scenes or fast-forward as desired.\u00a0 That said, whether I actually do that in Aurora\u2019s Nightmare is going to depend a bit on my engine since I don\u2019t have the programming skills to create any of those systems from scratch.\u00a0 So we\u2019ll see how things come together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve mentioned in the past that, like any good visual novel, Aurora\u2019s Nightmare will include the option to skip over previously read scenes.\u00a0 That\u2019s invaluable when you\u2019re replaying individual sections or even the entire game to experiment with different choices.
