{"id":364,"date":"2015-11-22T02:27:50","date_gmt":"2015-11-22T07:27:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penandswordgames.com\/AurorasNightmare\/?p=364"},"modified":"2015-11-22T02:27:50","modified_gmt":"2015-11-22T07:27:50","slug":"software","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penandswordgames.com\/AurorasNightmare\/software\/","title":{"rendered":"Software"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s a quick look at some of the software I use to create Aurora\u2019s Nightmare.<\/p>\n<p>Adobe Photoshop<br \/>\nPhotoshop is the program of choice for most 2D artists (unless you\u2019re doing vector, in which case you hop over to Illustrator).\u00a0 I used Photoshop to digitize and color the character art, though much of the shading was done in Gimp (a free knock-off), since Brian doesn\u2019t have Photoshop.\u00a0 Most of the work on the backgrounds and CGs was done with Photoshop as well, though a little bit was done using 3D modeling software as well (you can read Badriel\u2019s posts for more details).<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft Word<br \/>\nLike any game, Aurora\u2019s Nightmare requires documentation and, being a text heavy title, a script as well.\u00a0 Some game designers and writers use specialized software for those things but, for me, Word is always my go to program.\u00a0 It\u2019s powerful, easy to use, and creates files in a format that pretty much everyone can open.\u00a0 Plus, I don\u2019t have to spend hundreds of dollars buying specialized software.<\/p>\n<p>RenPy<br \/>\nThe game engine is the program that actually makes the game run.\u00a0 There are a number of free and commercial engines out there, including things like Unreal and Unity.\u00a0 But RenPy is specifically made for visual novels.\u00a0 That sacrifices some power and flexibility, but it also makes is easier to use.\u00a0 And it\u2019s free, which is always a plus.\u00a0 That said, since I haven\u2019t started compiling Aurora\u2019s Nightmare in the engine yet (I\u2019m waiting until all the content for the upcoming demo is completed), I\u2019m not 100% committed to RenPy yet, but it\u2019s almost a sure thing.<\/p>\n<p>Dropbox<br \/>\nIf you need a quick and free way to share file among a group of people, Dropbox works fairly well.\u00a0 It&#8217;s limited in a lot of ways, but for a small project without too many people involved, it\u2019s good enough.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s just about it.\u00a0 The only thing I haven\u2019t mentioned is sound software, but that\u2019s because the sound is still in the early stages.\u00a0 I\u2019ll take about it sometime in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s a quick look at some of the software I use to create Aurora\u2019s Nightmare.
